HHF: Proposed Projects

  • Success in 2014!
  •

First and foremost, I would like to thank everyone who's made the decision to support our efforts in the recent fundraising drive. We raised an impressive amount, and are looking forward to eventually reaching our goal of $20,000 as we drive toward the 80th reunion.
Two of our largest objectives has been reached: The new pool table & the Biergarten concrete!
  •

    Patio on the East Lawn:

After intense negotiations with the university facilities department, and two days before the 78th reunion, we finally accomplished the goal of pouring a new concrete patio on the eastern lawn of the house. Walled on three sides, we realized that this would be a unique opportunity to create a special space, and dubbed it the ‘Chi Sig Biergarten’. The concept and title were adopted to celebrate the experiences of brothers traveling abroad, at times together, and the sharing of those experiences with brothers across generations for years to come.

    Total Cost: $6,000

  •

    New Pool Table and Lamp:

Based on commentary by the current members, and its mention in the most recent Swordfish, it seems that our effort to bring back this staple of life at the house has brought new life to the chapter room.
Based on this feedback, I feel that our interest and investment in the infrastructure of the house is bearing fruit and should encourage us to continue to support of our young brothers.
Please review the list of outstanding projects, some of which are already deep into the planning phase, and help us reach our goal. This will serve as an important element of our future as we move toward the celebration of our 80th year of existence. With a strong and engaged alumni base, increased relations with the university, and a physical house we can all be proud of, we will have achieved our short term goals and will turn our focus toward the long-term...what we hope is another 80 years of prosperity.
    Total Cost:$1,000

  • Proposals for 2015!
  •

    Finish the Biergarten:
The first phase was getting the patio poured. In the second phase we hope to build the infrastructure and atmosphere around the Biergarten. Targeted elements including: hedges and irrigation, tables, proper lighting, and the resurrection of our beloved Manneken Pis (Piss Boy) statue.
Ultimately, we want this to be an interactive project. We’re not only asking for financial assistance, but advice from alumni that have traveled to Europe, and have stories to tell. Stop by the house, or join us for Homecoming or Reunion, and help make this a special space to be shared across generations of Chi Sigs.
    Estimated cost: $2,500
  •

    Restoring the Landscaping:
Another objective for the 2014/15 school year is to restore our original landscaping around the house, starting with re-planting the hedges that lined the walkway to the house and along the roadway. Furthermore, we would also like to re-plant the large shade tree (Tree of Whoa) in the eastern lawn. The university was forced to cut it down a few years ago due to disease. Whether brothers are spending time doing homework in the shade between classes, circling the couches for impromptu jam sessions, or just seeking relief from the relentless reunion heat, the benefits of replanting this tree are numerous and undeniable.
    Estimated cost: $3,000
  • More to Come:
  •

The Pool Table and Biergarten were our main targets in the short term, but more projects are in the works. We have a lot of good to do as we move toward our 80th year as a brotherhood, and if we don't care, nobody else will either. So, I invite you to join us as we shoot for $20,000 raised by 2016.

    New Member Class Projects
Each year the New Members are given the opportunity to leave their mark on the house. In years past these projects have included the repainting of house, adding a light canopy to the backyard, and building or restoring the house fences. This year will be no different, nor any year moving forward. To accomplish their objectives, the new members need our support for materials and supplies. The funding for these projects comes from the Harrington House Fund. Please consider pledging your support and help keep this activity worthwhile for all the future generations to come.
